Whoa, an interview only months before they split.
Stumbled upon this and found it entertaining and interesting.
Enjoy.
Whoa, an interview only months before they split.
I remember watching this the night it originally aired ( Letterman was my show back then). After seeing this, then soon after they broke up....talk about a shitty year! The pain and shock was unbearable!
Yeah those first months of 1985 are strange. EP came out on 1/28/85 (I think) and there's a couple interesting interviews like this Letterman one you posted..
- Jan-02-1985 // Dave on Letterman show
- Jan-28-1985 // EP released
- Feb-18-1985 // Ed and Val at Hard Rock cafe where he's very nervous and tense and talks about the next record, and says Ted's no longer w VH.
- Mar-xx-1985? // Dave Friday Night Videos interview (i'll post below) which he throws a jab at Ed/Val wanting to have a baby (and he's wearing same exact clothes as Letterman show, hmm)
- Mar-xx-1985? // Dave French interview (seems like this is after he left, but not announced yet...who knows)
- Mar-17-1985 // CBS party where Ed, Val and Dave are pictured
- Apr-01-1985 // Dave's gone...

Yeah it's almost like Dave + Ted were out already in that Feb 18 interview w Ed. Like they were a pkg deal but I'm sure that was more reason Dave wanted to leave. obviously shit was already going down. And those other Dave interviews he's already giving clues.
I've come to realize the split was the best thing to happen ( looking back now).
No Ted. Eddie was going in the softer direction with or without Dave. So it's almost certain the next record would've been a step down. Dave would've made those songs better but in the end we get those 6 PERFECT records preserved with no chance for a clunker (except some will say DD was a clunker)
That 7th album would have tarnished their perfect record of greatness most likely in some way
