Something tells me he would have made it just out of spite.

I haven't listened to OU812 in.....oh......20 years maybe? But I don't remember it being that bad. I remember having that tape in my Walkman constantly when it first came out.....listening to it by the pool that whole summer. It's definitely light, but is it really that awful? I'll have to give it another spin.

I just listened to it yesterday (I enjoy torture...j/k).
I never thought it was any worse than the other Hagar albums I guess.
It has a lot of big time clunkers no doubt (Feels So Good, When Its Love, Finish)... but there's 1 or 2 decent rockers, musically at least (I think A.F.U. guitar-wise is cool). I liked those Hagar albums less and less with each release.

But... you must not have liked it that much..if it's been 20 years

Good point. I stopped listening to vh for a long stretch after VHIII came out. They kinda disappeared and I wasn't listening to them much at all. I was really into Megadeth around that time. Then I went on an Oasis and DMB bender, lol. When I came back to VH it has been all about the Dave years. I used to wear those old 8 tracks out!! And I, too, was an Eddie Van Halen elitist back in the day.............constantly getting into arguments over who the "best" guitarist was. I think I partly forced myself to like the Van Hagar stuff because I spent so much time and energy defending EVH that it seemed like I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't.

I bought that thing in 1988 (OU812), and i knew it would be weak.

Radio was playing, "AFU" & "Black & Blue," and let's face it, those were a couple
    of tired sounding rockers.

Gone were the days of all guns blazing, ala "Unchained" or even "Panama."

"AFU" was kind of an anemic boogie riff, i guess.
I liked the solo, though, which is why i bought the tape.
The ending cadenza was cool, as well.

Little things like that, would always suck me in.
Ed would have to put forth minimal effort, and i'd break down & buy it.

But i thought the tape sucked.
Opening with the synth heavy, Mine all mine & When it's love, set the tone for disaster.
By comparison, AFU sounded like Metallica, LOL!

Cabo Wabo was pretentious, hated the visual of Sammy "making love in the sand."
Side two was even worse, save for the last song.
"Finish" was the only tune that sounded, maybe, up to 5150 standards, as far as crafting
a clever sounding pop rock tune.

"Black & Blue" sounded like they made it up, as they went along.
    The intro had potential, though.

We tried to play it in the car, on the way to the Monsters of Rock show in Foxborough.
I just remember all six of us only made it through side one.
After that, no joke, we threw in WACF.

Agreed. I think I maybe have listened to OU812 all the way through...once, and I don't care to relisten to it. It's not my bias about the CVH-era... it's just a shit record. At least there were some interesting parts on 5150, but OU812 was like a really watered-down Foreigner clone. Everything was so flat. I think we got that CD around the first month we got into Van Halen; we went on a splurge to get all the catalog. So many tracks were skipped the first time. I was like "Is this the same band?" I mean, I still listened to 5150 and F.U.C.K. for a while longer and then just grew tired of them. Idunno, I never had to really skip anything on II or WACF.
    Ready, Eddie!
