If I'm not mistaken that means they were Fixed trems, not floating.

The way you "fix" a floating trem is to put a block in the back between the body and the trem block. They also make special trem stops too. This way it wont move at all. On a Fender type trem, you just tighten all the screws up top.

Ed seldom used floaters, but he has. Now why? because of string breaks. Have you ever heard talk about Steinys. They are floaters. The part i posted earlier and got beat down about was this.
"Floyds are all floaters" that doesnt mean that yours or mine or Ed's works like that. It simply means that by nature all floyds are floaters. Then its up to the user if they are gonna Fix, block or flush mount them.
I guarantee i can take your flush mounted floyd and make it float in another guitar. Do you want to bet your ownership of your instruments?

Okay, so I misunderstood you, yes all Floyds are the same, well not all floyds, but all models can be both floating or fixed.

That's a nice thread to read.
Thanks for bringing it up, Outta!

Aren't the tremolos fixed on most if not all of the early `80's guitars? Meaning, they're screwed onto a normally-routed body, so there's no place for the trem to go backwards if you pull up on it. On later `80's guitars the tremolo sits down in a little "swimming pool" route in the body with a piece of foam underneath, so you can raise the bar or turn the bar towards the tail end of the guitar and press it and the trem can sink down into the route. That's what I've observed.
As I've said elsewhere, I think the Sperzel locking tuners should've killed off the Floyd Rose nearly 20 years ago. The whole tuning issue stems from the tuners slipping, not anything with the bridge. I can go nuts on my tremolo and the Sperzels keep it perfectly in tune most of the time, and if the low E does slip a quarter step it's a lot easier to reach up and tune the actual peg than some tiny fine tuner knob that barely has two turns in it. As most of the "Solo -> Ain't Talkin' `Bout Love" boots show, the Floyd failed Eddie's high E string more than once.

all depends on how you set it up. from what i've read strat trems were at first made to be set up flush like you said, but then people started playing with the setup to have it angled a bit so they could pull up too, adn that just became the standard. as of right now, even the Fender website suggests an angle be put on the trem so that the back is 1/8 inch above the wood.

I also remember reading that the point of ed's quarter was to counter act this. so it would be set up this way, but the quarter would prevent the backwards movement. as of right now, even the Fender website suggests an angle be put on the trem so that the back is 1/8 inch above the wood.

The quarter was to do with the set up of the Floyd Rose and not the standard Fender tremolo on the Frankenstein in its original state...
