VEGAS SUCKS!! (or is it just me?)

I recently went to Vegas and got married. It seemed to me that everything was really expensive. Sure the drinks were free if you were gambling, but otherwise they were $8.50 each. Buffets that used to be $12.95 are now $24.95, which basically isn't worth it unless you're a linebacker for Green Bay. What's the point of gorging yourself just to "get even"? I'm going back next year to attend the Mr Olympia bodybuilding show and am wondering if anyone knows of some great spots to hit? My friends clued me to this great mexican restaurant 10 minutes away from the strip but so worth the drive as far as quality food, non crazy atmosphere and decent prices. Anyone else know of secret spots so I don't feel so shitty after a holiday?

Vegas has lost alot of appeal to me. Buffets use to be a bargin but now, yikes. I still enjoy going but, I tend to eat off the strip now. Try out the old strip, heard some of the buffets there were still reasonably priced.

Vegas is just our country underscored, at least of late. Bright lights and clean lines and special effects but having no density or special character. Pretty much, everthing is becoming homogenous, coast to coast. Flourescent signs and consolidated inventories and cameras overhead. My old man goes to Vegas every year and says there are still dealers there that were there years ago ... and actually remember him; and no, he is not a high roller by any means. He says Vegas lost a lot of its character when the corporations took over yet still can find good reasons to return.

    Unhappy

Corporate America taking over Vegas was a terrible thing. Also I have nothing against familys with young kids, but to make vegas a Family Vacation! AGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Leave the little kids at home when going to Vegas.
They need to bring back The Sands and the rest of the classic casinos. The Mint, Thunderbird, El Rancho, and The Stardust (RIP) etc, etc....... Sinatra, Dino and Sammy are rolling in their graves!

I just back from Vegas three weeks ago, and you are right...Vegas is not what it used to be. I learned that the days of eating and drinking "real cheap" are pretty much over! Sure you can go to old Vegas for bargain eating....but back in the day all of Las Vegas was a bargain.....I just go to the old school Casinos lie "the Frontier" and "Binions" even the Tropicana is still kinda cool....

I feel your pain Outtalove, and Scottie I agree with ya too...I miss The Sands and The Startdust too....

Is there anything left in that bottle?

Mandolin-you're right on the mark, America has turned into a corporation. Every city has the same francises that look identical everywhere. Malls with all the same stores, cookie cutter productions and everything is low quality and boring. And let's not forget those fucking tip jars everywhere...
Vegas was supposed to turn family oriented, but I remember reading somewhere that it was a big failure in the end. If you'll notice, the latest ad campaigns are all about sin and "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.." There was a big amusement park behind the MGM I believe and that's gone because no one was actually bringing their kids there. And why should they? So they can watch Daddy lose their college fund at the blackjack table?

I've been to England-you're lucky you got anything good to eat at all! (joke) Seriously though, Vegas makes so much money, why do they need to overcharge on the items mentioned?

Well Outtalove, I don't think your going to find anything moderately cheap in Vegas anymore. Yes, I recall those $1.99 buffets etc., but really, you weren't getting much. I've had a few of them myself. What happens (and you can blame tourists for this) is the restaurants in casinos leave these questionnaires on tables. The tourists fill them out, saying what they desire from the casino. From there, they start changing the menu around. It's you who gets stuck paying for the upgrade. I should know, as I've worked for a major casino for a number of yrs. (but no longer do) so I've seen firsthand how they operate. As far as cheaper places to dine, I would have to agree with Redsun and recommend the old strip. You might find something there reasonable. I can relate to you saying your folks used to see the same dealers in Vegas, same thing applied to my folks. They always went to their same casinos looking for that "lucky" dealer or two. Anymore, you don't find much loyalty. mainly because most casinos are now corporately ran. The workers don't feel any partiality towards their bosses. They can just as easily walk across the street and get another job these days. Seen that happen many times too.

I have some married friends in big Vegas, I'll ask them and see what they say as far as respectable eats. I wouldn't hold my breath though man!
