Sounds like they wanted this one to be their "Black" album.
I was reading recent interviews in Metal Hammer, and they kept saying things like,
"It's more accessible, yet it retains our heaviness."
Once a metal band says that, you know they are saying:
"Yeah, we sold out a bit on this one, but there's a couple older style song's just in case."
Nah, it's a lot more progressive than their last album.
The production is awful. You can barely hear the drums, the vocals sound drowned out like they're under water (and all have a weird effect on them), and the guitars are really compressed and it's hard to make out the riffs.
There aren't really any songs that I would imagine being hits, besides maybe "the Motherload".
There are no real memorable riffs, each song has a nice moment in it, but the rest is just mediocre stuff that goes nowhere. I don't know, maybe I'm speaking too soon, or it's the production that let it down.
The verse riffs are just bland, and the vocal approach to the verses is different... Sounds like a pre-chorus instead of a verse. Also, the whole album is very disjointed sounding without tracks fading into other tracks, which is very un-Mastodon.
I was really let down by the final track, which was meant to be an 8 minute epic with Scott Kelly from Neurosis (the tracks with him guesting are always sensational), but you can barely make out it's him singing, and the song never takes off past the cool intro. It just stays the same for 8 minutes... Fuck.
The second half of the track "Halloween" is very cool, though. Great guitar work.
Death to Nick Raskulinecz... It's almost like he was trying to make the vocals sound more like Ghost, to be honest.
I still obsess over that first Ghost album, though i never listen to the second one.
But that first one is in my top 5 greatest metal albums of all time.
Man, i love Neurosis!
"The sun that never sets" is one of my fave albums, from back in the day.
They were a big influence on early Isis, as well.
I'm curious to check out this new Mastodon CD...
Is "Halloween" a cover of this old, but great, King Diamond track?
It's growing on me now, but still, most of the tracks are songs like "Quintessence", "This Mortal Soil" or "The Octopus Has No Friends". Good tunes (the second mentioned one is a top 5 favourite Mastodon tune), but not crushing ones, or instant classics.
I'm keen to hear the third Ghost, though that guy at my old school kind of ruined them for me because he wouldn't shut up about them.
It's not the same song, haha.
Speaking of Isis, they're back, and they're taking over the Middle East! Who knew their music would translate so well to that area of the world?
