How can it be that long ? WOW ...
This song has stood the test of time . It was a huge hit and milestone for our favorite band , back in the day . It still holds up as a catchy and memorable song - which is a cool thing to accomplish . 1984 is my favorite VH record . This song was the flagship single that got Eddie and the boys even MORE acclaim than they already had ...
"There's a little bit of Van Halen in everyone ..."![]()
"Who Dares , Wins ..."
"Van Halen was never about the singer ..."
I like "Jump". It's not their best tune, but was nice to hear what they could do with that style of a song, I just didn't want them to make a habit of it.
Looking back, I should have questioned what might be lurking in EVH's mind. If "Jump" had failed, the whole story would be different. I think "the tenor of the times" ruined the band's sound too. All that bad MIDI and digital technology spreading like a disease through the recording industry. Simmons drums, digital reverb drenched hair metal, BonJovi/Desmond Child lyrical crimes. The mid-80's was a shitty age for hard rock (or whatever you wanna call it).
I love being right !

I just thought "Jump" was so ordinary in comparison to say, "Hear about it later" or even "Girl Gone Bad."
That synth riff never struck me as something (if i were Eddie) that i'd keep, or show to the band.
He would talk about it like it was his masterpiece (I guess it might have been, in a commercial sense), yet even
"I'll Wait" beat the snot out of it.
It's a song that represents a kinder, gentler Van Halen.
Mom loved it, my niece has it on her iPod, you get the idea.
But it feels like a real departure, or it did at the time.
They premiered it on MTV, and i was confused by it.
I thought the title "Jump!" was great, but expected a guitar riff.
Never, ever liked those damn Simmons drums, from that era.
Yeah, that riff sounds so of it's time.
It feels like it should run during the credits for "Beverly Hills Cop."
I guess the pre-chorus is well written, that part feels kind of hook-y, i guess.
I do think 1984/Jump is a horrible way to start a record, though.
"Hot for teacher" should have opened, as it has such a great build-up & feels so VH huge!
Snare sound also bugs me on that album sometimes, it's different than the sound he had on the first 4 albums too.
