All my friends on FB are jumping on the Lou reed bandwagon, now that he died.
These are people that consider Beyonce high art...

I'll be honest, i was never a big Reed or Velvet Underground fan.
I thought Nico was an atrocious singer, as well.
To me, it felt like self absorbed art school kids forming a clique, hanging out with Warhol,
and writing two chord, monotone vocal "anthems."

I do love that song, "Rock and Roll," though.
    That one works for me.

But i just don't get the visionary stuff.
The music & vocals always seemed so detatched & cold.
There was no swing to it, no R&B elements (except for the colored girls in Wild side. LOL.)

Anyway, what the fuck do i know...

I understand not liking it, but it's visionary because nothing had ever sounded like it, and it shaped the future of music.

In a broad sense, when they created that sound, someone had to say "this is good, let's keep doing it" instead of "nah, this is too noisy, too dissonant, let's sound like The Beatles" like everyone else was doing. That's visionary, just like EVH making wacky sounds, but somehow finding them useful and worth controlling, and then putting them into the right context.

"Venus in Furs" is completely unique. That song is fucking creepy, and sexy, and sleazy, and I defy you to find a song like it, that preceded it. They added a whole range of sounds to "rock music" and lyrically were representing people that were outside the mainstream. They shifted the mainstream. Visionary.

Lou Reed has loads of shitty music, maybe more than any other artist of his stature (just wanted to add that).

The deaths are gonna start mounting in the near future. I bet this one is playing with David Bowie's head a bit. Any of the Stones (aside from Jagger, who looks really healthy) could go, Paul McCartney, Ringo...any of those Sixtie's guys, really.

Hey we nearly lost Eddie last summer due to that diet drink he took.

I wonder what Sammy would say if that happened? I bet he would do a 180 degree turn and instead of putting Eddie down, it would be, 'Oh what a great guy he was, we had such chemistry etc...'
