For whatever reason I always dug this guitar solo. Skip to the 1:00 mark.
Obviously most of us here lean towards hard rock and metal which is known for over the top playing.
But what about some favorite leads that aren't metal or very hard rock?
Any that move you?
Not necesarily from a technical standpoint - just favorites for whatever reason.
For me an old favorite which I finally downloaded is: Reelin' in the Years by Steely Dan.
Guitar by Elliot Randall. The song actually opens with this great lick and keeps getting better.
Love the melody, love the heavy fuzz.
Just a lyrical and great catchy lead!
Second up Terry Kaths' lead in Chicagos' 25 or 6to 4

Ah...too many to choose from
Bold As Love (John Mayer) Solo starts around 1:54
I Don't Need No Doctor (John Mayer) Solo starts around 3:40
Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix)
Castles Made of Sand (Jimi Hendrix)
Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix)
Life Without You (Stevie Ray Vaughan)

Part 2:
I'm a big fan of 3 bands that most people don't pay much attention to:
Cake
Better Than Ezra
Morphine
I'll post some videos when I get home from work. Lots of cool guitar between the 3....including Morphine's 2 string slide bass. (that's right!)
"I won't go down in history, but I will go down on your sister."
-David Lee Roth-
A lot of Hendrix, especially Hey Joe and Bleeding Heart.
And this riff:
Most of you have probably never heard of this band.
It was a legendary blues band here in Holland.
I saw them 3 times, I would love to see them again but the singer passed away last year.
The original guitarist, Eelco Gelling, came up with this riff but I think Erwin Java (the guitarist in the video) plays it much better.
He's one of the best guitarists in Holland, in my opinion.
He's a Dutchman of Indonesian descent just like Eddie, and me![]()
I love the guitar solo in "Boston Rag," by Steely Dan (not sure if it was Denny Dias or Elliot Randall).
Another brilliant Dan solo is Larry Carlton's lead in, "Kid Charlamegne."
I really love Elliott Easton's guitar solo in the Cars, "Dangerous Type."
To me, the guitar solo sounds like the "dangerous, bitchy" girl in the song, laughing at the guy infatuated with her.
Listen to that solo, it's sort of taunting Ric's lyrics & vocals.
Neil Giraldo's solo in Pat Benatar's , Precious Time, is one of my all time favorite solo's.
I love how he incorporates that weird tapping line, into a melodic & fiery solo.
I also love that cool part where he slides fretted notes with open strings, creating a cool drone.
Another solo (though, it's more just a melodic break), i like, is the one in "Run to you," by Bryan Adams.
I love that little repeated arpegiatted thing.
Orleans, Dance With Me
The acoustic guitar work on this isn't earth shattering or mind boggling, it's just pretty and always puts a smile on my face. Particularly at the very end.
I think there's a mandolin in there too....
