Is Dancing in the Street any less pop and radio friendly than Jump? How about Pretty freakin' Woman? Seriously??

It drives me nuts when people go out of their way to dislike certain things because it's not the deep thing to like. It's trying way too hard.

Is We Will Rock You/ We Are The Champions crap? How about Baba O'Riley or Won't Get Fooled Again?
With all due respect, opening with a synth instrumental & then an all-out synth pop tune, is a HUGE and conscious shift, on their part.
1984 is far less "heavy & dangerous" than "Hang 'em High!", "The Full bug," even "Pretty Woman" retained that swagger (it's a great cover of a great song), and it features one of the meanest intros ever.

So i'm not buying your "1984 is just as ballsy as the other VH records" argument.
I don't think the track "1984" is exactly a "Won't get fooled again" or "Baba O'reily," so keep reachin', cowboy.

You like the pop element of VH, that's great.
I prefer something a bit more spontaneous & off the rails like WACF.

Having said this, i do like parts of 1984 & i do regard it as the last gasp of classic VH.

I have a great bootleg DVD of that tour, and they still just kill it (unlike Live without a net).
The set list is great, Ed's solo is phenomenal, and the stage, itself, is only second to the FW era.
1984 was a great tour, with some incredible tunes from the six pack.
I revisit that era, via bootlegs, all the time & enjoy it.

I think i'm sounding a bit harsher than i'd like.

1984 has some great moments on it, and Ed still retained his inherent "Eddie-ness."
    I even like "I'll wait," a lot!
Go figure, i hate "Jump", but "I'll wait" always made the fur rise, for me.
"Girl gone bad" is incredible, as well.

"House of pain" and "Drop dead legs" always sounded lazy to me.
"Drop dead legs" feels like they are making it up, as they go along.
"House of Pain" was cool, but it was them running out of material on an already short album.
I guess the same could be said for DD.

Panama & HFT, i have just heard too many times.
I remember really liking them, when i first heard them on the radio.

I dunno, a different sounding record with a different direction.
    The tour sounded great, though.

Since when are instrumentals and cover tunes not CVH?

The first 3 albums feature these things.

For me, 1984 will always have the more commercial sound than Diver Down ever thought about having.

The sad thing is those folks might even pick 5150 over Diverdown.

"It had more songs on the radio, so it must be better!"

    Right...
