    Diver Down vs. 1984

Any chance we can get a poll on this???

Ok, so I have this crazy idea of doing a march madness type bracket with VH albums from the DLR era. So since there's 6, I'm seeding them like this:

#1 seed Van Halen (1st rd bye)
#2 seed Van Halen II (1st rd bye)
#3 1984 vs #6 Diver Down (Winner faces #2 seed)
#4 Women and Children First vs #5 Fair Warning (Winner faces #1 seed)

Winners advance to the 2nd round. So unless anyone has any serious objections, let's kick it off with Diver Down vs 1984. You can use whatever criteria you wish when judging them, just make sure you explain why you picked one over the other.

    I'll go first.....
1984 - I know, I know, Diver Down is a great summer album and I love Hang em High and Where Have All the Good Times Gone, Unchained is top notch too. But I've always been turned off by the number of cover songs on it. 1984 showcases everything Van Halen can do as a band on one magnificent album. The Pop single Jump, the hard rockin' Panama, the heavy metal of Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain, the swing of Top Jimmy, the emotion of I'll Wait.........you name it, this album's got it all and it's got it in spades. If you didn't know anything about the band, and only listened to this album, you'd never guess that they were ripping apart at the seams.

    What's your choice?

    Unchained was on FW btw.......
My vote has to go with 1984 for girl gone bad, house of pain and drop dead legs being the strong points.
DD was great but i didnt care for dancing in the street or big bad bill.

1984 without a doubt! DD has some (some) great points. But 1984 has HFT, Panama, I'll wait. Those songs alone puts it over the top!

Diverdown over 1984, any day of the week.

DD was the last real VH album, 1984 was already pointing to the new direction.
84 had a different feel, logo, tons of keyboards (Christ, they opened with two keyboard tunes, while DD had the one-two punch of 'Where have all the goodtimes gone!' and 'Hang 'em.'

DD is loaded with REAL VH like, Little Guitars, Hang em high, Secrets, The Full bug, Cathedral...
Intruder/Pretty Woman is still just killer (remember the video?)

1984 has throwaways like DD Legs & Top Jimmy.
Jump is just gay, 1984 (the song) is pointless...

Diverdown still felt like old school Van Halen to me.
By 1984 they dressed kinda different & seemed more self aware & mature.

Yea those DD songs are great! Little Guitars is one of my VH faves. But you can't over look HFT and Panama. To me those are CVH songs at there best. And with that said those songs always sounded to me like they were old songs and not really like the rest of the album? Like i could hear Panama on WACF or FW

    Finally, Unchained 'gets it'!

Spot on, couldn't have put it better.
"I am not one of those weak-spirited, sappy Americans who want to be liked by all the people around them. I donít care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it. My affections, being concentrated over a few people, are not spread all over Hell in a vile attempt to placate sulky, worthless shits."

    ~ William S. Burroughs
