The readers of the best selling guitar magazine in the world, Guitar World, recently voted Eddie Van Halen the “Best Rock Guitarist of 2008″ in the 15th Annual Guitar World Readers Poll. Eddie won by a landslide, receiving nearly seven times as many votes as the runner up, Angus Young...

The poll was conducted at the end of 2008 and the results were printed in the April 2009 issue of Guitar World.

Didn't someone say "...Hell, I don't have to be a musician to know what my ears heard from all the youtubers I watched from that tour to know he's clearly lost at times! Yeah, sure, a live show can be somewhat different than an album, but shouldn't stray all the fuck over hell's half acre at times. Plus, as I've said a million times before here, the majority of reviews were from musicians who were watching and scrutinizing his every note. I value their opinions too. Way too many people said so, that he wasn't as sharp as he should have been..."

Hmmm, I guess the majority of reviews were from musicians that don't read Guitar World. They must read, Kazoo Player?

Is there any "value" in Guitar World readers opinion?

I wonder where Joe the guitarist in on that list?

Who loves you?

Mas Tequila!! :101:

Kazoo Player??? Haha! Does such a goldmine of musical talent and information exist? How do I get a subscription?

Surprising to me, given the lack of new material, but hopefully the tour impressed enough folks (esp younger fans) that a new album would sell well (i.e. better than VHIII) and kick Ed into making some more new tunes.

Surprised to read that Angus was in 2nd. He's great at what he does, but surely there were some more impressive or original players on tour...?

If you read through the comments (in the GW link), it's very similar to here.

One guy, Jim Knapp, is their token 1sum2.
He goes on about Ed being a shitty human being for excluding Michael Anthony, etc.
Then there's a GF type poster, saying, "Well, Ed was great, but he hasn't issued anything but cheesy porno music in ten years."
Then there is an unchained type, explaining, why an Eddie VH is a much better musician than a Joe Satriani or Yngwie. (hint: the songs).

Anyway, it's mainly pro-Ed, but still interesting to read the mix.
Looking forward to this issue!

Some thoughts.

1) Not bad for someone that hasn't released a studio album in this century.

2) This reaffirms what I saw in 2007. Eddie was ON!

3) What I find interesting is the lack of posts on this subject.

On second thought, I've edited this post to say only I am no longer going to rise to your bait. Done and done.

Way to go Eddie! I too thought he was on during the last tour, but my ears are not the best. I have the boot of that night and everytime I hear it it still sounds good to me. Congrats Ed, I'm looking forward to some new stuff.

You're welcome.

So has anyone seen this issue? Who else is on the list? Couldn't seem to find it in the brief time I've had to be online in the last few days...Just curious...

As much as I love Ed, well, Classic Ed anyways, this also show you the current state of music, which for the most part, is shit. Aside from non popular genres, there ain't much goin' on.

Good, it shows that you now acknowledge that Ed is a hack nowadays. Do you even remotely realize that GUITAR WORLD magazine is owned by the man? And that those "yes men" who he has appointed to run it are voting him in? Why, of course you don't, silly rabbit.

Ed didn't do a goddamn thing to deserve this honor in 2008

No, it only shows that she would rather not continue the ridiculous arguement that has plagued this board.

Then who did earn it? Sam Hagar? John Mayer? Joe Satriani?

Came back to the site after a little sabbatical after I heard about this to ask this question: how the hell does a guy who hasn't made music in 2008 win this award?

No disrespect to Ed at all, he's still the best guitarist on earth in my book anyway. But you gotta give this award to someone who played guitar in '08. Are there honestly that few great guitarists left? There's no young blood out there? Is that the state music is in?

Even though GW isn't going to give the title to some unknown or even an up-and-comer like Bumblefoot, many prominent guitarists put out albums in '08. Angus? Hetfield? Sure, they aren't anywhere near Ed, but they were making music.

Also, just out of curiosity, where did the "Ed owns GW" rumor start? I've never heard the story.

Just my $.02. Back into hiding for me.

I think that had a lot of people scratching their heads, but it's not the first time it's happened. Eric Johnson got the same distinction (albeit in Guitar Player, a superior magazine) multiple times in between albums as I recall.

Still, I would've given it to someone who actually made a record. Buckethead played on no fewer than eight albums in 2008, ranging from solo stuff, to Gn'R, to records with Viggo Mortensen and Bootsy Collins. Not all of it was great, but I'd think him a better candidate than Eddie. EVH played just fine on tour, but it was nothing special compared to ten years ago. It was more based on nostalgia and celebrity, IMO.

Ed has already earned these accolades eons ago Double E, back when he truly deserved them. To give it to him now, is just plain silly and patronizing in every way. It explains his surprised look in the photos. Without offering up any new music to base this on, it just seems trivial.

Guess they didn't have anything better to do that day!

And it wasn't the end of the world!
The same goes now - EVH got the award and life goes on!

Maybe Satriani would be voted as the best guitar player this year. Who knows?

After Ed took that break and went back to rehab he came back onto that stage and ripped the crowds another asshole.
When they finally made it to Cinicnnati they blew the fucking walls down at USBank Arena, no denying that.

He has always been able to rip it while intoxicated which led me to believe that the drugs he was doing most recently were of a different type than back in the day. To be honest, I was as unpredictable and cocky as he was when I was on Zoloft...that shit made me want to actually kill people that pissed me off.

Hell, my doctor took me off of that shit when he discovered that my personality took a serious leave of absence.

I've been on Prozac for a couple of years now, and as you may have noticed, I'm a lot happier. But if I miss a dose? Fucking take cover, I can go seriously postal on a muh fucka'.
